Rep. Sanalitro Calls on Governor Pritzker to Fully Fund Local Governments; Protect Families from Higher Property Taxes

SPRINGFIELD, IL – State Representative Jennifer Sanalitro (R-Hanover Park) is calling on Governor Pritzker to fully fund the Local Government Distributive Fund and end his efforts to cut millions of dollars away from Illinois municipalities and counties.

Governor Pritzker is proposing a cut of about $60 million to LGDF funding. Local governments use these dollars to support police and fire protection, repair roads, and keep basic services running.

Rep. Sanalitro said the cut would put more pressure on local governments and could lead to higher property taxes, higher fees, or reduced services.

“Property taxes are higher than they’ve ever been. Actually, property taxes here in Illinois are the highest in the country,” said Rep. Sanalitro. “That, along with unexpected fees around every single corner, means families are being asked to do more with less.”

Sanalitro said families in northern DuPage and northwest Cook counties are already feeling the impact of Illinois’ high cost of living. “The people I represent tell me all the time they feel like it’s getting more expensive just to live in Illinois,” said Rep. Sanalitro. “I can say with certainty they are not just imagining it.”

LGDF dollars are distributed to local governments across the state in proportion to the income taxes collected from the community. When that funding is reduced, municipalities and counties are left with fewer options to cover costs.

“When that funding gets cut, local leaders don’t have a lot of options,” said Rep. Sanalitro. “They either raise property taxes, increase fees, or cut services. None of which are good outcomes for working families or businesses.”

Rep. Sanalitro said the Governor’s proposal would make it harder for communities to manage costs and could push higher expenses onto taxpayers. “The Governor must fully fund the LGDF, give municipalities the resources they need, and help prevent raising property taxes for families in the process,” said Rep. Sanalitro.
