Rep. Jennifer Sanalitro Files Bill to Enhance E-Bike Roadway Safety

ILLINOIS – State Representative Jennifer Sanalitro (R-Hanover Park) has filed new legislation to improve safety on Illinois roadways by requiring anyone operating a low-speed electric bicycle on a public roadway to have a valid driver’s license.

House Bill 4158 would prohibit individuals from riding a low-speed electric bicycle on public roads unless they are properly licensed, ensuring operators understand basic traffic laws and roadway rules.

“As electric bicycles become more common, we need to make sure our kids and bicycle enthusiasts stay safe on roadways,” said Rep. Sanalitro. “If someone is riding on a public street alongside cars and trucks, they should understand the rules of the road. Requiring a valid driver’s license is a simple step to help protect both riders and drivers from preventable tragedy.”

Sanalitro said the measure was brought forth and many concerns from her local mayors and city councils, particularly in the busy suburban communities of the 48th District where traffic congestion continues to increase.

The legislation is currently awaiting consideration in the Illinois House.
