Sanalitro Introduces Back-to-School Tax Relief for Families

SPRINGFIELD, IL – State Representative Jennifer Sanalitro (R-Hanover Park) has filed legislation (HB1905) to exempt school supplies from sales tax during the back-to-school season. The measure aims to ease the financial burden on parents and guardians while ensuring all students have the tools they need to succeed.

“Back-to-school shopping can be a major expense for families, especially with the rising costs we see today,” said Rep. Sanalitro. “This bill provides meaningful relief to parents and helps ensure students are equipped with the resources they need to thrive in the classroom.”

The proposed sales tax holiday would apply to essential items such as notebooks, pencils, backpacks, and other school supplies during the first 7 calendar days of August each year. By reducing the costs on back to school supplies the legislation demonstrates support for families and encourages investment in Illinois students.

“This is a simple but impactful way to support families and students across Illinois,” added Rep. Sanalitro. “Our children are the future, and this bill is a step toward making education more affordable for all.”

The legislation is now under consideration in the 104th General Assembly.
