ILLINOIS – State Representative Jennifer Sanalitro released the following statement after the Illinois Legislative Inspector General published their report on the recent sexual harassment scandal in the General Assembly.
“The Legislative Inspector General released its report, but instead of providing answers, it has raised even more questions about inappropriate conduct from members in the Illinois General Assembly.
We now have a lobbyist referenced in the Inspector General’s report publicly disputing how her experience was characterized. When someone directly involved says the official report does not accurately reflect what happened, Illinoisans have every right to question whether they are getting the full story.
This is bigger than the conduct of one former legislator. It raises serious concerns about a culture in Springfield where protecting the institution and political leadership can appear to take priority over protecting women who come forward.
As a mother and a lawmaker, I find that unacceptable. Women working in and around the Capitol should never have to wonder whether reporting harassment will result in delays, retaliation, or their experiences being minimized behind closed doors.
The victims deserve answers. The public deserves the truth. Until every question is answered and the full facts are brought into the open, I will continue demanding transparency, accountability, and meaningful ethics reform in Springfield.”
