SPRINGFIELD, IL – State Representative Jennifer Sanalitro (R-Hanover Park), Martin McLaughlin (R-Barrington Hills), and Jason Bunting (R-Emington) participated in a press conference on Wednesday to layout their concerns with Governor Pritzker’s BUILD Plan and his proposed $60 million dollar cut to local governments.
Rep. Sanalitro, the two term lawmaker from DuPage County, said her concerns stem from usurping local zoning authority from townships, municipalities and counties and replacing it with one size fits all mandates codified in State statute.
“This isn’t just a fight over local control and zoning authority… This is a fight for the individual character of each community across Illinois’ said Sanalitro. “Residents and leaders from communities like Elk Grove Village, Addison, and Roselle have used their local zoning codes to preserve their unique character and maintain property values, but the Governor’s BUILD Plan would take all that away.”
Sanalitro also raised concerns for communities around Chicago’s World Class O’Hare International Airport. “In O’Hare-area communities, developers could start tearing down long-coveted single-family homes to build multifamily housing. Clogging streets with parking problems and introducing more transient rental living into stable suburban neighborhoods.”
Representative Martin McLaughlin (R-Barrington Hills) said “For years, Springfield’s tax-and-spend Democrats have shortchanged local governments while talking out of both sides of the mouth during every legislative session and subcommittee. They promise that they support moving LGDF back to 10% and move a vote to the floor. Instead, they have demanded more taxes from the very people struggling to afford life in Illinois.”
“I represent Republicans, Democrats, and Independents and they don’t want us to play political games, they want us to work together to solve the state’s problems” McLaughlin concluded.
Representative Jason Bunting (R-Emington) echoed many of the same concerns: “Decisions should be made – as much as possible – by our neighbors. Not by some far-off bureaucracy trying to impose one-size-fits-all statewide solutions on every community in the state.”
Bunting also made remarks about large scale solar projects being built in rural Illinois communities: “I have heard from local leaders who have concerns about large green energy projects being built in their communities. Even though they have been elected to represent their neighbors, they have been shut out of the discussion of these projects.”
