ILLINOIS – State Representative Jennifer Sanalitro (R-Hanover Park) is renewing her push for meaningful property tax relief by unveiling her Property Tax Relief Package for the 2026 Spring Legislative Session of the 104th General Assembly.
Illinois families pay the highest property taxes in the nation. For many homeowners, property taxes are one of their largest monthly expenses and a major reason families and businesses are choosing to leave the state.
Representative Sanalitro’s proposals—House Bill 9 and House Bill 1906—directly address the growing burden of school district levies, which often account for 50 percent or more of a homeowner’s total property tax bill.
“I am continuing my efforts this spring to bring real, tangible solutions to the property tax crisis impacting Illinois families and businesses,” said Rep. Sanalitro. “Illinois has the highest effective property tax rate in the country. That is the result of years of unfunded mandates, the withholding of local communities’ share of sales tax revenue from the Local Government Distributive Fund (LGDF), and the continued neglect of school district financial needs. These bills address those problems directly, and I look forward to building bipartisan support to get them across the finish line.”
Rep. Jennifer Sanalitro’s Property Tax Relief Proposals:
HB 09 School District Tax Relief Grants – Sponsored by Rep. Dan Ugaste (R-Geneva) and co-sponsored by Rep. Sanalitro, this legislation establishes a program to award property tax relief grants to school districts to help reduce the burden on local taxpayers.
HB 1906 School District Levy Exemption – Sponsored by Rep. Sanalitro, this legislation creates a senior citizens homestead exemption from school district levies for seniors who no longer have children in school.
