Rep. Sanalitro Slams Lawmakers’ Misplaced Priorities; Calls for Real Tax Relief for Illinois Families

SPRINGFIELD – As the spring legislative session continues, State Representative Jennifer Sanalitro joined House Republican lawmakers for a press conference at the Capitol to highlight the misplaced priorities of the House Democrat majority. With the state facing a $737 million budget shortfall for FY26, Assistant Minority Leader C.D. Davidsmeyer (R-Murrayville), State Representative Jennifer Sanalitro (R-Hanover Park), and State Representative Bill Hauter (R-Morton) took aim at recent Democrat-backed bills that fail to address Illinois’ biggest fiscal challenges.

Rep. Sanalitro specifically called out the majority party for ignoring the real concerns of Illinois families while pushing a costly, ineffective agenda.

“Just a few weeks ago, House Republicans walked off the floor in protest because Democrats wasted an entire session-day debating toothless resolutions on federal issues—issues outside the responsibility of state government—while ignoring the real problems facing Illinois families,” said Sanalitro.

She highlighted that one of the most pressing issues she hears from constituents is frustration with Illinois’ broken tax system, yet instead of addressing it, Democrats continue pushing reckless spending and tax hikes.

“Illinois families already face the highest state and local tax burden in the nation, yet the Governor has now proposed the largest budget in state history—$55.2 billion,” said Sanalitro. “This massive spending plan won’t fix our tax system. It will only make things worse for hardworking families and businesses.”

Instead of working to ease the tax burden, Sanalitro noted that Democrats are prioritizing radical and frivolous policies, including:

  • A bill to legalize prostitution.
  • A bill to give judges discretion in cases of first-degree murder for offenders under 21.
  • A ban on grocery bags.
  • Price restrictions on water bottles.
  • Special protections for skunk and raccoon rehabilitation.

Meanwhile, Republicans have introduced real solutions to provide tax relief, including two Sanalitro sponsored bills eliminating taxes on tips and overtime pay, which would reduce the financial burden on working Illinoisans.

“Despite all the political grandstanding about high taxes, the majority party has blocked both of these bills from even being discussed in committee,” said Sanalitro. “Illinoisans deserve a government that prioritizes them, not more wasteful spending and unnecessary regulations.”

While she remains frustrated with the majority party’s misaligned priorities, Sanalitro reaffirmed her commitment to working across the aisle to find real solutions. For further details or inquiries, please contact Representative Sanalitro’s office at 630-349-0645.
