SPRINGFIELD, IL – State Representative Jennifer Sanalitro (R-Hanover Park) has introduced two pieces of legislation to provide much-needed property tax relief to seniors in Illinois. The first bill (HB3580) of the Sanalitro’s Seniors’ Relief Package increases the income limit for the Low-Income Senior Freeze to $75,000 annually and second (HB1906) creates an exemption from school district levies for seniors without children attending schools within the district which the senior resides.
“Illinois property taxes are among the highest in the nation, and seniors on fixed incomes in my district and across the state are being pushed out of their homes,” said Rep. Sanalitro. “This legislation will ease the financial burden on our seniors and help them enjoy life in their beloved homes and communities.”
More seniors will qualify for property tax relief when raising the income cap for the low-income senior freeze, thus giving them the stability they need as the cost of living continues to rise. Separately, the newly created school levy exemption would recognize that many seniors no longer have children in school and deserve relief from this line item in their tax bill.
“This is about fairness and recognizing the contributions seniors have made to their communities,” added Rep. Sanalitro. “They shouldn’t have to choose between paying their property taxes and other essential needs.”
The legislation is now under consideration in the 104th General Assembly.
