Statement from Rep. Sanalitro on Trump Administration Lawsuit Against Illinois, Cook County & Chicago Sanctuary Status

COOK COUNTY – The following statement was released by State Representative Jennifer Sanalitro regarding the lawsuit filed by the Trump Justice Department against Illinois, Cook County, and Chicago’s sanctuary status.

“The federal lawsuit filed against Illinois, Chicago, and Cook County is a direct result of failed policies that put politics ahead of public safety. For too long, state and city leaders have prioritized protecting those who break our laws over the safety and security of Illinois families.

Illinois’ sanctuary status handcuffs law enforcement and makes it harder for them to remove dangerous criminals from our communities. The fact that local officials are refusing even the most basic cooperation with immigration enforcement is both reckless and unacceptable.

At a time when crime is already out of control in Chicago and beyond, our priority should be supporting law enforcement. I stand with the men and women of law enforcement and with law-abiding Illinoisans who deserve safer communities. It’s time for Governor Pritzker, Mayor Johnson, and Cook County leaders to stop playing politics and put public safety first.”
