Rep. Sanalitro Calls for Civility and Respect

Watch State Representative Jennifer Sanalitro call for increased civility and respect.

I want to discuss my concerns with some things happening across our state and country.

It has to do with recent news stories and the continued increase in the lack of civility and mutual respect for those we disagree with.

In past weeks we have seen protests on college campuses, protestors swarming the highways around O’hare airport, and most concerning: the flags of foreign nations being flown above our own country’s flag…. A major display of disrespect.

We live here in the United States and flying the flag of a foreign nation above our own flag is absolutely unacceptable.

Specifically to address the protestors around O’Hare Airport, I cosponsored legislation that would make it a felony for protesters to block first responders from accessing roadways during a protest.

While it is important to protect everyone’s right to free speech, we must do better at expressing our opinions in a civil manner. When you go out and protest on a busy roadway, you are running the risk of blocking emergency vehicles from keeping our communities safe, getting people help during a medical emergency, and even smaller – back to work on time.

Just because we disagree on something, that doesn’t give us permission to demonize and accuse the other side of being evil.

I am relatively new here in Springfield and I am doing what I can to build a responsible voting record that the residents of DuPage and NW Cook county can be proud of!
